AI Training for Government Employees in India (2026-27): 7 Options

The quick answerStart with what the government already provides. iGOT Karmayogi hosts 218 courses on AI and emerging technologies for officials, and MeitY’s free YUVA AI for ALL course is on the same platform. For deeper work, NeGD runs “AI in Governance” programmes at IIT Delhi, C-DAC and NIELIT centres train officials through FutureSkills Prime, and LBSNAA runs an AI course for senior officers. Departments that need hands-on practice on their own files can add custom in-department training, bought through GeM. If your department is considering that, ask Skillopedia for a proposal.

The shortlist

Seven AI training options for government employees

Government employees in India have more AI training available to them than most private-sector staff realise, and much of it costs nothing to the learner. The challenge is choosing: self-paced courses build awareness, but using AI safely on real files, notes and data takes practice and clear rules. This list covers both, from national platforms to residential programmes and custom training. Every government option was checked on an official page (PIB, iGOT, NeGD, LBSNAA or NPTEL) in October 2026.

  1. iGOT Karmayogi AI courses: 218 AI and emerging-tech courses for officials
  2. YUVA AI for ALL: a free 4.5-hour foundation course from MeitY
  3. FutureSkills Prime: MeitY–Nasscom platform with C-DAC and NIELIT training for officials
  4. NeGD “AI in Governance”: short programmes at IITs and IIMs
  5. LBSNAA AI Champions: in-service AI course for senior officers
  6. NPTEL / SWAYAM AI courses: free university-level online courses
  7. Custom in-department training: hands-on workshops on the department’s own work
How we chose. We included programmes that government employees in India can actually join, confirmed on an official page in October 2026, and one private-sector option for departments. Government programmes come first because they are free or funded for officials. Skillopedia offers the custom training option and is listed with that disclosure; this guide is published on Skillopedia’s own site. We do not claim any government client relationship.

For departments

7. Custom in-department AI training (Skillopedia)

Skillopedia: live in-company training, listed on its own site

Platform courses build awareness, but staff learn to use AI safely when they practise on the kind of work they do every day, under the department’s own rules. Skillopedia (Skillopedia LLP, Mumbai, est. 2017; 335+ organisations trained across 13 sectors) runs live, hands-on workshops for organisations, on-site or online. For a public-sector team, sessions use sanitised examples of the department’s own tasks, such as drafting notes and letters, summarising long reports, preparing presentations and analysing data in spreadsheets, in tools the department has approved.

Who it suits: departments, PSUs and public bodies that have completed iGOT basics and now want staff using approved AI tools on real work.

Pros
  • Practice on the department’s own work
  • Builds the department’s data rule into training
  • Can run alongside iGOT requirements
Cons
  • Paid, so it needs procurement
  • Not a Government of India certificate
  • Depends on the department having approved tools

Also worth knowing (UAE): Gulf governments are training civil servants at scale. The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources announced a partnership with MBZUAI in May 2026 to train 80,000 federal employees in agentic AI; Digital Dubai’s “AI+” programme targets about 50,000 Dubai Government employees; and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Government Enablement launched “AiNative” in October 2026 for 20,000 government employees. Frameworks to plan against

Three official documents every training cell should read

AI Competency Framework for Public Sector Officials. Released by MeitY under the IndiaAI Mission in March 2025, alongside iGOT-AI, a personalised course recommender. Use it to decide which competencies each grade needs before choosing courses.

India AI Governance Guidelines. Published by MeitY in November 2025, setting out guiding principles and pillars for safe, trusted AI. They are a useful reference for the “responsible use” part of any training.

IndiaAI Mission. Approved by the Cabinet in March 2024 with an outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore and seven components, including FutureSkills and Safe & Trusted AI. Its FutureSkills pillar mainly targets students, so officials’ training runs largely through iGOT, FutureSkills Prime and NeGD.

How to choose

Choosing AI training: for an individual officer, and for a department

For an individual employee, begin with YUVA AI for ALL and the AI courses on iGOT that match your work, since they count towards your annual learning. If you want depth, add an NPTEL course or apply through your training cell for an NeGD programme. Senior officers should ask their state about LBSNAA nominations.

For a department, decide first which tools staff are allowed to use and what data may go into them. Then make iGOT basics the common floor, send the officers who will run AI projects to NeGD or FutureSkills Prime centre training, and consider hands-on, in-department sessions where staff need to apply AI to their own files. Map all of it to the AI Competency Framework.

For PSUs and autonomous bodies, the same logic applies, with more freedom to choose tools and providers under your own procurement rules. If you want help designing the hands-on part, talk to us.

Questions to ask any provider

  • Will staff practise on tasks like ours, using approved tools?
  • How is government data kept out of public AI tools?
  • Is the trainer cleared to see sample documents?
  • Can the course be delivered in Hindi or the state language?

Red flags

  • Training that asks staff to upload real files to free tools
  • Claims of official accreditation that cannot be checked
  • Generic slides with no government examples
  • No plan for what happens after the session

For heads of department

  • Which tools are approved, and for which data?
  • Which three tasks should AI help with first?
  • Who reviews AI-assisted drafts before issue?
  • How will we report progress?

Procurement and data security

Buying training and protecting government data

Procurement. Government buyers usually procure training through GeM, which has a “Professional Training Service” category where the buyer can specify the training type, venue and any certification. Larger or unusual engagements follow Chapter 6 of the General Financial Rules, 2017 and the Department of Expenditure’s manual for procuring consultancy and other services. Your finance and procurement wing will advise on the right route.

Data security. Keep classified and personal data out of public AI tools. In early 2025, Reuters reported that the Finance Ministry had advised staff to avoid AI tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek on office devices, citing confidentiality. Training should use sanitised examples and teach what may never be pasted into an AI tool.

Personal data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Rules notified in November 2025 apply to personal data that departments process, with some exemptions for the State. Training should cover citizen data handling in general terms, with specifics left to the department’s legal advisers.

Not legal or procurement advice. Skillopedia is a training firm. This section summarises public information in general terms; follow your department’s security policy, IT guidelines and procurement rules.

FAQ

AI training for government employees: common questions

Yes. iGOT Karmayogi hosts 218 AI and emerging-technology courses for onboarded employees, and MeitY’s YUVA AI for ALL is free on iGOT and FutureSkills Prime. NeGD and LBSNAA programmes state no course fee for nominated officers.

According to a Lok Sabha reply published by PIB in August 2026, iGOT has 218 courses on AI and emerging technologies, covering areas such as office productivity, agriculture, public health, education and cyber security.

iGOT issues course completion certificates, and YUVA AI for ALL gives a Government of India certificate. NPTEL gives a verifiable certificate after a proctored exam costing ₹1,000.

From the 2025-26 reporting year, central government employees and AIS officers must complete prescribed iGOT courses each year, recorded in their APAR. Which courses are prescribed is decided by the ministry or department.

LBSNAA’s “AI Champions for Digital Transformation” is designed for senior officers and needs state nomination. NeGD’s “AI in Governance” at IIT Delhi suits officers leading digital projects.

It depends on your department’s rules. Reuters reported in 2025 that the Finance Ministry advised staff to avoid such tools on office devices. Follow your department’s IT and security policy and never enter classified or personal data into public AI tools.

Basic AI literacy, safe and approved tools, what data may never be entered, checking AI output before use, and practice on everyday tasks such as notes, letters, summaries and data reports. The MeitY AI Competency Framework for Public Sector Officials is a good reference.

Usually through GeM, which has a Professional Training Service category, or under Chapter 6 of the General Financial Rules, 2017 for other routes. Your procurement wing will confirm the right process.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to personal data processing generally, with some exemptions for the State. Departments should take their own legal advice on specifics.

Yes. Recent programmes include the FAHR–MBZUAI partnership for 80,000 federal employees, Digital Dubai’s “AI+” programme and Abu Dhabi’s “AiNative” programme. See our comparison of AI training companies in the UAE for private options.

We do not claim any government client on this page. Skillopedia is a training firm that has worked with 335+ organisations across 13 sectors and runs live, in-company AI training that departments can procure.

Agree approved tools and data rules, make iGOT and YUVA AI for ALL the common foundation, then add hands-on practice on three everyday tasks. Our guide to AI skills gap analysis helps decide who needs what.
