AI training for employees in India · for L&D and HR heads

AI Training Programmes for Employees in India (2026-27): 10 Options for L&D and HR Heads

The short answerMost Indian employers need three layers, not one course: a short AI foundations programme for all staff, role tracks where people practise on their own work, and a small champions group that keeps adoption going. Free vendor academies from OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft cover the first layer well. Enterprise platforms such as Coursera, LinkedIn Learning and Great Learning add scale. Live in-company cohorts, such as Skillopedia’s, are the strongest fit for the role-track layer. If you want help designing that middle layer, ask us for a scoped proposal.

  2. Anthropic Academy: free AI Fluency courses
  3. Google AI Essentials: short self-paced course with a Google certificate
  4. FutureSkills Prime: the nasscom and MeitY skilling platform
  5. Coursera GenAI Skills Track: enterprise learning paths with private practice environments

Five types of programme

Know which type you are buying before you compare names

Most disappointment with AI training comes from buying the right product for the wrong layer: a video library for people who needed practice, or a leadership retreat for a team that needed new habits.

Free

Vendor academies

Free courses from the companies that build the tools. Accurate on their own product and quick to update, but generic about your processes and silent on your data rules.

Per seat

Platform enterprise plans

Large libraries licensed per seat, with paths, dashboards and credentials. Good for reach and self-directed learners; weaker on changing what teams do on Monday.

Per participant

University executive programmes

Campus or online programmes for senior leaders on strategy, governance and investment decisions. Valuable for a handful of people, not for a workforce.

Per cohort

In-company cohorts

Live sessions for one organisation, built around its own documents, tools and policies. The most direct route to changed work habits, and the most dependent on the quality of scoping.

Internal

Champions programmes

A small network of trained colleagues who answer questions, share prompts and report problems. Cheap to run and easy to neglect, so it needs an owner and a calendar.

Vendor academy · free

1. OpenAI Academy

OpenAI’s learning site offers free, self-paced courses in four groups: applying AI at work, building with AI, leading AI adoption, and teaching with AI. For a general workforce the useful sequence is AI Foundations (60 to 75 minutes: prompts, context, reviewing outputs, responsible use), then Applied AI Foundations and Agents and Workflows, which move from single prompts to repeatable workflows with review points. Managers can add AI Leadership, a 180-minute course on priorities, governance and an adoption roadmap.

Who it suits: organisations on ChatGPT that want a free, consistent baseline for every employee before role training.

Strengths

  • Free, short and current with the product
  • Assessments give you a simple completion signal
  • Learners can join as individuals or through an organisation

Watch-outs

  • Teaches ChatGPT, not your processes or approved tools
  • Badges are not certifications, as OpenAI itself states
  • No practice on your own documents or data rules

2. Anthropic Academy

Anthropic’s academy describes itself as free courses, tutorials and use cases. Three courses suit employee programmes: AI Fluency: Framework and foundations (14 lessons and a quiz, about four hours), which teaches a four-part approach of Delegation, Description, Discernment and Diligence; AI capabilities and limitations (about three and a half hours); and Building effective human-agent teams, a 45-minute beta course on preparing a team to work with agents.

Who it suits: any organisation that wants a tool-neutral vocabulary for judging AI output, whatever assistant it has licensed.

Strengths

  • The fluency framework travels across tools
  • Strong on judgement, not just prompting
  • Free and self-paced

Watch-outs

  • Longer than a typical all-staff module
  • No certificate is mentioned on the catalogue page
  • Not tailored to Indian regulation or your policies

Platform course

3. Google AI Essentials

Designed by Google and delivered on Coursera, AI Essentials is a short, self-paced course in five modules with videos, readings and hands-on activities. Google states it takes under five hours and leads to a Google certificate that learners can add to their profile.

Who it suits: organisations on Google Workspace, and employees who value a recognisable certificate for their own development plan.

Strengths

  • Short enough for busy front-line managers
  • Recognisable certificate
  • Practical rather than technical

Watch-outs

  • Priced as a Coursera subscription; Google lists $49 a month after a 7-day trial in the US and Canada, and says other countries may pay less
  • No team or organisation offer is described on the course page
  • Generic examples

Government-industry platform

4. FutureSkills Prime

FutureSkills Prime describes itself as a digital skilling initiative by nasscom and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It lists an artificial intelligence category alongside other technology skills, aligned to National Occupational Standards and the NSQF. Courses are offered at discounted prices, and the site says the Government of India offers incentives on course completion, subject to its terms. Learners who pass the assessments earn nasscom certifications.

Who it suits: technical staff and early-career employees who want a recognised Indian credential, encouraged through your learning policy.

Strengths

  • Indian, standards-aligned credential
  • Low cost to the learner
  • Wide technology catalogue beyond AI

Watch-outs

  • The home page describes no corporate programme, so treat it as an individual route
  • More technical than most business staff need
  • Incentive terms change; check them on the site

5. Coursera GenAI Skills Track

Coursera for Business sells a GenAI Skills Track for organisations: pre-built learning paths and skills collections for analysts, marketers, developers and executives, hands-on projects, and practice in what Coursera calls secure, private LLM environments. Content refreshes as new skills emerge, and learners earn verified credentials. Coursera also reports that it launched a GenAI Academy with an executive track; the current business page presents the offer as the Skills Track.

Who it suits: large, distributed workforces that need many role paths and central reporting.

Strengths

  • Breadth of university and industry content
  • Private practice environment reduces data worries during learning
  • Admin reporting for L&D

Watch-outs

  • Pricing is through sales only
  • Completion rates depend on your own nudges and manager support
  • Practice is on sample tasks, not your documents

6. LinkedIn Learning AI Skill Pathways

LinkedIn Learning’s business site cites 24,000+ expert-led courses, including current AI and generative AI content, and positions AI Skill Pathways as a way to build AI skills across a workforce. It also lists interactive learning with AI-driven coaching and role-play, and credentials, prep courses and assessments across four credential types.

Who it suits: organisations that already license LinkedIn Learning and want to point it at AI without a new vendor.

Strengths

  • Familiar to employees; low adoption friction
  • Role-play practice for conversations, such as sales or HR
  • Easy to combine with non-AI skills

Watch-outs

  • Plans and prices are not published
  • Video-led learning rarely changes team workflows on its own
  • Outcome statistics on the page are vendor figures without a stated baseline

Live in-company or cohort training

8. Skillopedia in-company cohorts

Disclosure: this guide is published on Skillopedia’s own site. Skillopedia LLP, founded in Mumbai in 2017, runs live AI programmes for organisations: on-site in Indian cities or live online in IST. Its role tracks put each function on its own masked documents, data and tools, from HR policy answers to finance reviews and sales follow-ups, under a usage rule your compliance team approves. Engagements follow the FLUENT framework, from scoping and baselines to 30, 60 and 90-day check-ins. Skillopedia has trained teams at more than 335 organisations across 13 sectors, with an average participant rating of 4.8/5 from 300+ surveyed participants.

Who it suits: L&D and HR heads who already have a foundations layer, or need one built in, and now want specific teams to change how they work.

Strengths

  • Labs on your own work, so habits carry over
  • DPDP-aware rule practised in every session
  • Same programme on-site and online across locations

Watch-outs

  • Not a self-paced library; you schedule cohorts
  • No public batches for individuals
  • Needs two to four weeks of scoping and sample material

Topics include separating high-return use cases from experiments, agentic workflows and board-ready AI governance, with an applied track built around each participant’s organisation. ISB lists an Enterprise Solutions arm for custom work.

Who it suits: the leaders who will sponsor and govern your employee programme, so that it has budget and a mandate.

Design before you buy

Start with a needs analysis, then build three tiers

An employee programme is a design problem before it is a purchasing problem. Spend two or three weeks on a needs analysis and the vendor choices become obvious.

  1. Inventory the tools. Which assistants are licensed, on which plans, for whom, and which are banned. Training people on a tool they cannot use at work wastes the budget.
  2. Map tasks, not job titles. Ask each function for the five tasks that eat the most time each month. Those tasks become the exercises.
  3. Baseline skills honestly. A short practical check beats a self-rating survey. Our AI skills gap analysis guide sets out a method.
  4. Agree the data rule. Decide with legal what may and may not be pasted into which tool, before anyone trains.
  5. Set two or three measures. Pick them now, so the baseline exists when training starts.
Illustration of an analyst at a desk working on a monitor of bar and donut charts
Tier 1 · everyoneAI foundationsTwo to four hours: what the approved tools do, how to review output, and the data rule. A free vendor academy course plus a short internal session usually covers it. See our AI literacy training guide.
Tier 2 · by roleRole tracksHalf a day to two days per function, practising on real tasks: HR letters, finance reviews, sales follow-ups. This is where in-company cohorts or a well-chosen platform path earn their cost.
Tier 3 · a few per teamChampionsOne trained person per team who answers questions, shares prompts and reports problems. Give them two hours a month and a named owner in L&D.
Alongside · leadersLeadership trackSenior leaders learn enough to sponsor, fund and govern the programme, through an executive course or a half-day internal session.

How to choose

Individuals or teams: the questions that decide it

If you are an employee choosing for yourself, a free vendor academy course plus Google AI Essentials or a FutureSkills Prime course gives you a solid start and a credential. If you are buying for a team, the questions change.

Questions to ask every vendor

  • Which of our tools and plans will participants practise on?
  • How much of the time is hands-on, and on whose material?
  • How do you handle personal data in exercises?
  • What will a manager see change after 30 days, and how will we measure it?
  • Who facilitates, and can we meet them before signing?
  • What happens after the session: clinics, champions, refreshers?
  • What exactly is the certificate, and who issues it?

Red flags

  • Outcome promises such as fixed productivity gains before any scoping
  • Claims of vendor certification or partnership you cannot verify on the vendor’s site
  • The same deck for every function and every company
  • Exercises that ask staff to paste real customer or employee data into personal accounts
  • No plan beyond the training day
  • Prices that only appear after you sign

Want a second opinion on a proposal you already have? Send it to us and we will tell you what we would change.

A rollout path

A 90-day rollout for a mid-size Indian employer

Weeks 1 to 3 · DesignNeeds analysis, tool inventory, data rule signed by legal, baselines for three tasks per pilot team.
Weeks 4 to 6 · Foundations and pilotsAll staff complete a foundations course; two pilot teams run role tracks on their own work.
Weeks 7 to 10 · ScaleRole tracks for the next four functions; champions named and trained; prompt and template library opened.
Weeks 11 to 13 · ReviewRe-time the baseline tasks, review usage, retire what nobody uses and plan the next quarter.

What good looks like

What a good employee AI programme covers

  • Judgement as well as prompting. Anthropic’s AI Fluency course frames this as Delegation, Description, Discernment and Diligence; OpenAI’s foundations course teaches reviewing outputs and responsible use. Both point to the same idea: knowing when not to trust the output.
  • Workflows, not one-off prompts. OpenAI’s applied courses move from single prompts to repeatable workflows with review points, which is where time is actually saved.
  • Your approved tools only. Train on the plans you license. Microsoft’s Copilot adoption kit, for example, assumes a tenant prepared by IT before users start.
  • A data rule practised in exercises, not read once in a policy.
  • A named owner after training, usually champions plus an L&D lead.

DPDP basics for L&D

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the DPDP Rules notified in November 2025 set duties for organisations handling digital personal data, including purpose limits, notice, security safeguards and breach reporting, with a phased period to comply. For training, that means masked or synthetic records in exercises and a clear rule on which tools may see personal data.

Not legal advice. You may have read that employers must provide AI literacy training. That obligation is in Article 4 of the EU AI Act and applies to organisations within its scope; India has no equivalent statute today. Indian companies with EU operations should ask counsel whether it applies to them.

Budgeting

Four ways to budget an employee AI programme in INR

We do not publish typical fees, because they vary with headcount, locations and depth. These are the pricing models you will meet, and what each buys.

FAQ

AI training for employees in India: common questions

There is no single answer, because programmes serve different layers. Free vendor academies suit all-staff foundations, enterprise platforms suit self-directed learners at scale, and live in-company cohorts suit teams that need to change how they work. Most employers combine two or three.

Foundations for everyone usually take two to four hours. Role tracks take half a day to two days per function, followed by short check-ins over the next one to three months.

Yes. OpenAI Academy and Anthropic Academy offer free self-paced courses, and Microsoft provides free adoption material for Copilot customers. They work well for foundations but do not use your own processes or data rules.

Not as a specific legal duty today. The AI literacy obligation people quote comes from Article 4 of the EU AI Act, which applies to organisations within that law’s scope. Indian companies with EU operations should take legal advice. This is general information, not legal advice.

Exercises should use masked or synthetic records, and staff should learn which tools may receive personal data. The Act and its 2025 Rules set duties on purpose, notice, safeguards and breach reporting that your AI usage rule should reflect.

Literacy is the shared baseline: what the tools do, their limits and the rules. Upskilling builds role-specific ability, such as an HR team drafting policy answers or a finance team reviewing variances with AI.

Use platforms for reach and self-directed learners, and in-company cohorts for priority teams whose work you want to change quickly. The two complement each other.

It depends on the programme. Google AI Essentials gives a Google certificate, FutureSkills Prime gives nasscom certifications after assessment, OpenAI Academy gives badges, and Skillopedia gives a certificate of completion. None of these is the same as a professional licence.

A common starting point is one per team or per 20 to 30 users, with time set aside each month and a named L&D owner. Adjust after the first quarter.

Combine free courses for everyone, per-seat licences where self-study works, fixed per-cohort quotes for priority functions and a few leadership places. Ask every vendor for an itemised quote in INR.

Yes. Many employers run on-site cohorts at head office and live online cohorts in IST for plants, branches and regional offices, all on the same exercises.

Time a few real tasks before and after, track which workflows are still used at 90 days, sample output quality and check the data rule. Report measured results only.

No. Skillopedia trains organisations in private cohorts. Individuals can start with the free vendor academies listed above.

Next step

Pick one function and three tasks. We will design the training around them.

Share your headcount, cities, licensed tools and the first function you want to move. We reply within one working day with questions, then a written proposal and a fixed INR quote.
